In Memory of George Darden
George (“Bill”) Radcliffe Darden, Jr., ASA 1963, passed away Tuesday, June 5, 2018, surrounded by his children, daughter’s in-law and grandchildren. He was born July 8, 1928 in Raleigh, NC to George Radcliffe Darden and Beatrice Jones Darden. George attended New Hanover HS, Wilmington, NC. After high school he joined the U.S. Army and served in the 82nd Airborne, Paratrooper and 82ndDivision Band (trumpet player).
After serving in the military, George graduated from the University of North Carolina, Chapel Hill, with a degree in Mathematics and was a member of the Sigma Nu social fraternity. George begin his career with The Provident Insurance Company as an Actuary and was a member of the Society of Actuaries. His career began in Chattanooga, TN and took him to Richmond, VA, Dallas, TX, and finally to Edmond, Oklahoma where he retired from the Reserve National Life Insurance Co. in Oklahoma City. George was a member of the Westminster Presbyterian Church, Oklahoma City, OK.
George’s interests over his life included music (played in a band and sang in the church choir), community theater, reading and the pursuit of knowledge, but his devotion was to his family. Married to Mary Jane Wilson Darden for 60 years and interested in all things related to his three children, Dad promoted, supported and encouraged education, Scouting, Sunday School, Indian Guides, YMCA sports, and all other things good and wholesome.
George is preceded in death by his wife, Mary Jane Wilson (“Sandie”) Darden. He is survived by his sister, Carolyn Darden Herndon of Charlottesville, VA, daughter Kathleen Darden, son George Radcliffe Darden, III and his wife Leanne Crisco Darden and their children, John and his wife Mallory Rickert Darden, Elizabeth and Mary Martha, and his son, William Lee Darden and his wife, Susan Kuhlke Darden and their children, William, Emily and Michael and nieces Beth Herndon Frame of Charlottesville, VA, and Rebecca Herndon Henkel of Fredericksburg VA.
