In Memory of Bernard Packer
August 27, 1932 – January 6, 2021
We mourn the loss and celebrate the life of Bernard Packer (“Bernie”) - Son, Brother, Cousin, Father, Uncle, Grandfather and Friend to many around the world who had the privilege of knowing him. He is survived by his wife, Gloria, daughter Leslie, sons Bruce and Jamie, daughter-in-laws, Moia and Alison, grandchildren Jeremy, Ben, Emily, Rebecca, Charlotte and Joshua.
Bernie was a graduate of Bronx Science High School and City College and served in the Army during the Korean War. He worked as an Actuary for over 40 years, achieving the status of Assistant Chief Actuary over his many years at the New York State Insurance Department. During these years, Bernie devoted himself to his family, his work and his friends, always connecting to the people around him by sharing his wonderful stories about growing up in the Bronx with his close-knit family and his service in Hawaii during the war.
After retiring in 1994, Bernie continued to weave a wonderful web of connections through his genealogy research over more than 25 years, uncovering countless family members (and many who weren’t!), but so many of whom we never would have known existed but for his tireless efforts. Most importantly, he connected with people in such a genuine way that profoundly touched anyone with whom he came into contact. As long as we live, he too shall live for he is now a part of us, as we remember him. His memory will always remain a blessing to us all.
