Description: This session will27601 summarize the key National Association of Insurance Commissioners (NAIC) activities with a primary focus on updates to principle-based reserve valuations and appointed actuary topics. Hear insights into the current set of activities and initiatives being considered and/or adopted by the NAIC Life Actuarial Task Force (LATF) and the NAIC Risk Based Capital Working Group. In addition, other actuarial practice issues and other appointed actuary and opinion topics relevant to life insurance, variable annuities and fixed annuities will be discussed, including recent exposures and adoptions by the Actuarial Standards Board. By the end of the session, attendees will understand what changes are being made to reserves, RBC, PBR and actuarial standards and related topics, and the anticipated timing of such emerging changes.

Description: At the conclusion of the first part, attendees will be able to describe sources of reserve redundancy for products under Principle Based Reserve (PBR) and products under Commissioners' Annuity Reserve Valuation Method (CARVM). Such products include Term Life, Whole Life, Universal Life, and Fixed Annuity with and without rider. We will also review sources of capital redundancy from the C-1 factor under Risk-Based Capital (RBC) and assets such as Unrated Asset Credit Fund can have high C-1 factor even if its risks are limited. At the conclusion of the second part, the attendees will learn about potential Reserve Relief reinsurance solutions. Such solutions can provide Reserve Relief for annuity and term life businesses, as well as potential innovative asset-side solutions. Asset managers can structure assets that the C-1 factor aligned with the corresponding risk.

Description: There are a variety of regulatory changes that are being contemplated by the National Association of Insurance Commissioners (NAIC) that have the potential to materially impact actuarial, statutory reporting and disclosure requirements relating to reinsurance. This session will provide an introduction to these changes, explaining both the motivation as well as the potential impact these proposed changes may have on US ceding companies. The focus of the presentation will be primarily on changes affecting Asset Adequacy Testing and statutory risk transfer for combination Coinsurance / Yearly Renewable Term agreements. Description: There are many underwriting issues being discussed in states that challenge how information is used in the underwriting process. Learn more about a variety of rules and regulations, especially Colorado’s proposed regulation requiring a governance and risk management framework for life insurance carriers’ use of external consumer data and information sources (ECDIS), and algorithms and predictive models using ECDIS. This Colorado proposal is more far-reaching than the requirements of other states like New York and Connecticut, who have put up guardrails for the use of new data sets and algorithms especially for underwriting. Listen in as experts discuss the potential issues and implications of this and other proposed regulations.

Description: Mortality Model Selection and Combination in RAlternative approaches for selecting mortality models and forecasting mortality have been proposed. The usual practice is to base mortality forecasts on a single mortality model selected using in-sample goodness-of-fit measures. However, cross-validation and other alternative out-of-sample measures are increasingly being used in model selection, and model combination methods are becoming a common alternative to using a single mortality model. Such methods combine predictions from multiple mortality models to reduce model choice uncertainty and improve forecast accuracy. Explore techniques to select and combine mortality models using the freely available open source R package CoMoMo (https://github.com/kessysalvatory/CoMoMo), which extends the widely used R package StMoMo (https://CRAN.R-project.org/package=StMoMo). We will use data for the USA and other countries to discuss and demonstrate four different model combination approaches including simple model averaging, Bayesian model averaging, model confidence set, and stacked regression ensembles.
