Changes in Medical Trend Because of Provider Disruptions
Background
The COVID-19 pandemic helped accelerate many changes in the health care system that were already taking place, including with respect to provider operations. The pandemic temporarily but significantly shifted focus away from elective services to create capacity for treating COVID-19. Increasing frequency of hospital closures and consolidations as well as the infusion of private equity and venture capital into the provider space have changed the way providers practice medicine and shifted some priorities.
Research Objective and Deliverables
This project that will examine the impact of changes in provider operations on medical utilization and cost trends. The specific objective could analyze changes in utilization and cost trends or patterns as a result of one or more of the following contributing factors:
- Provider consolidation or new ownership
- Response to the COVID-19 pandemic
- Response to the COVID-19 pandemic

- Commercial, Medicare and Medicaid health insurers
- Large hospital systems, including those with embedded physician practices.
- AHIP or other professional groups associated with health insurers.
