In Memory of Bruce Paterson

Bruce Paterson FSA 2015, MAAA 1988, FCIA 1989, FCAS 1989, passed away on February 18, 2024 in Calgary, Alberta after a lengthy illness. Bruce is survived by his wife, Barbara, son Michael, brother-in-law David Mallory (Deb), brother-in-law Ian Mallory (Elena), mother-in-law Jean Lehman (Geoffrey), and several nieces and a nephew.

Bruce was born January 15, 1956. He began his working career as a mechanical engineer after graduating with a B.Eng and B.Sc. in mathematics. In the early 80s, he made a switch to the field of actuarial science. In addition to working as an actuary, Bruce was a business consultant, having completed an MBA in Finance from the University of Chicago Booth School of Business while working for AON Chicago. In 1992, he was appointed Chief Actuary for Aon Re in Chicago.

As a business consultant, Bruce specialized in risk management for reinsurance and insurance companies. He served on many board committees for La Salle Re, IPS Re, and Starr Excess Liabilities (Bermuda). He also worked for Arch Re in Bermuda and was appointed Actuary for several private and public insurance entities. He was an approved Captive Actuary for the State of Vermont Department of Financial Regulation and the State of Nevada Financial Institutions Division.

Bruce also worked for Progressive Insurance Company in Cleveland, Ohio, Liberty Canada Holdings as Chief Actuary and was Principal Consulting Actuary for the Kilbourne Company in San Diego, Actrex Partners in Toronto, and Mercer in Irvine, California. Early in his actuarial career Bruce was a Reserving Actuary for Travellers Canada. In his final years as an actuary Bruce worked for Aon Canada as the appointed actuary.

During his career Bruce worked with many exceptional individuals. He found the field of Actuarial Science to be very rewarding and he felt honoured to work with some of the most talented in the field.
