Election Message:
Mary Beth Ramsay video election message
It would be my honor and a privilege to serve on the SOA Board to support the advancement of fellow actuaries and help shape the future of our profession. The insurance industry is at a crossroads, and I believe my unique cross-sectional career, background, strategic leadership and effective communication skills will contribute to the SOA’s continuous success. By clicking here, you can view my campaign video to learn how we can take our profession and the SOA to greater heights, together.
My professional career spans 25 years and encompasses several actuarial roles and industry sectors, both traditional roles such as pension consulting, annuity pricing, inforce management, risk management and reinsurance as well as a non-traditional role in banking. I believe my diverse experience and background make me uniquely qualified to understand the evolving challenges of many facets of our membership today.
My strategic focus along with my experience will allow me to advance some of the biggest challenges facing our profession such as:
- Growth and Insurance Innovation: While actuaries are seen as experts in the insurance industry, we need to promote growth and continue our own professional development to remain relevant, meet today’s challenges and position ourselves for the future. Data analytics and digital solutions are fundamentally transforming the way that we work, and as actuaries we need to quickly and strategically adapt to stay competitive in the industry. If we want to continue to maintain our expert status within financial organizations, we must find a way to expand our knowledge, leadership skills, strategic thinking, and communication.
- Diversity, Equity and Inclusion: As a woman in leadership in a traditionally male-driven corporate world, I am a strong believer that advancing diversity, equity and inclusion in the workplace is one of the most critical factors for our success today. As an organization, we must recruit diverse candidates and provide a supportive culture that fosters and fuels success. We will grow stronger when we leverage the voices and unique experiences of new and diverse actuaries.
- Continued Research: The SOA is currently seen as a leader in insurance knowledge and research. We need to continue to invest and broaden these skills. As we exit the pandemic, our membership is looking for research to support business decisions. Our industry’s collaborative approach to research is unique and powerful. We must implement future-driven strategies and encourage further collaborations to make the best use of our existing talents and expertise.
