2023 Board Member Candidate
Vice President and Chief Actuary
Lumeris
St. Louis, MO
Introduction
I believe that actuaries are uniquely qualified to help their organizations, governments, and societies assess financial risks and develop solutions to the challenges we face. However, there are several emerging trends that will impact our work and value proposition as a profession. These include the rise of data science and the increasing impact of artificial intelligence.
As a board member, I would work for the profession as follows:
- Help the SOA continue to review and adapt its educational pathways for candidates and members to learn new skills and about emerging issues and technologies,
- Encourage greater outreach to attract individuals to our profession,
- Enhance the research framework for actuaries to remain relevant in our changing times, and
- Push the SOA to create further opportunities for actuaries to engage and collaborate across areas of practice and with actuarial societies in other countries.
My professional and volunteer experiences will be put to good use in fulfilling my board responsibilities. I have 35 years of actuarial experience in the healthcare industry working in pricing, valuation, financial forecasting, and value-based care for all types of products (e.g., Commercial, Medicare, and Medicaid). This includes working with large businesses, start-ups, and as a consultant for several years.
I have also been volunteering for the actuarial profession for over 20 years including several years on the executive team for the SOA’s Education and Examination committee, culminating in receiving the SOA’s 2021 President’s award for contributions to the profession. I currently sit on the Academy of Actuaries ASB Health committee and help grade the PA exam.
The challenges we face can be daunting ranging from climate change to rising health care costs to aging populations. However, through adaptation of our learning pathways and continued focus on research and collaboration, we will be able to address these increasingly complex and interconnected challenges.
I hope I can count on your support in becoming a member of the board. I have a strong desire to help our profession achieve its long term strategic plan and address the challenges we face. Thank you.
