Open Positions and Qualifications
The SOA seeks nominations for President-Elect and Vice-Chair (three-year term) and elected Board members (three-year term).
If you are a Fellow of the SOA (FSA) and you are compliant with the SOA Continuing Professional Development (CPD) requirements, you are eligible to run.
The Nominating Committee looks for diverse perspectives, areas of practices, industries, cultures and backgrounds. The most important characteristic is a nominee’s willingness to engage constructively in the strategic direction of the SOA.
Time Commitment
The SOA has restructured the time commitment and responsibilities for newly elected Board positions, distributing some commitments that were traditionally allocated for the presidential officer positions.
Elected Board members attend three SOA Board in-person meetings a year (March, June and October) and an in-person leadership orientation meeting in November. These meetings will each be 1.5 days and preparing for the meetings might take an additional .5 day. Typically, there are also can be virtual meetings between the SOA Board meetings. Those virtual meetings are scheduled at the discretion of the Board. Each elected Board member could have additional assignments that may average one to two hours per week. Most, if not all, of the SOA Board members are employed full-time.
The President-Elect and Vice-Chair has additional commitments to those noted for elected Board members, but many of our members who have served as SOA President-Elect and Vice-Chair have been employed full-time.
Prerequisite Experience
While prior experience is not a prerequisite, there is a certain amount of knowledge that comes from having served on SOA committees, section councils or the SOA Board. However, it is important to note that prior volunteer experience is not the only factor that determines a place on the ballot.
Elections
There is a limited number of seats available and a large pool of highly talented nominees. Not everyone will be elected. Many nominees are successful on their second or third attempt. There are numerous volunteer opportunities within the SOA that will help you develop leadership skills and make an impact on the profession.
