Research
We aim to leverage research to create new value for members and the profession as well as drive more learning opportunities.
- Collect a wide range of data internally to expand analysis of new datasets and analysis services.
- Accelerate ability to perform international research projects
- Seek out sponsors for research and focus on socially relevant research
- Expand research of tools and techniques to support education and professional development for actuaries that address what actuaries and the SOA face in the future
- Identify meaningful new future funding resources to support the SOA Research program
- Dedicate a portion of our ongoing research efforts to exploring issues addressing diversity, equity and inclusion
What's Happening Now
- We are already accelerating into international research projects. See our series of Spotlight on Retirement reports in China, Asia-Pacific and Latin America markets.
- The SOA released a new modeling tool, supported by a $150,000 grant from the Robert Wood Johnson Foundation, to assess the impact of COVID-19 on health care insurance estimates for 2021. This model and an accompanying research report help illustrate the new levels and timing of health care costs as a result of the COVID-19 outbreak, the potential scenarios over the next half year and direct costs from this pandemic.
- Looking to the future of actuarial work, the SOA published, “The Ethical Use of Artificial Intelligence for Actuaries” report which has been the basis for several professional development sessions over the past year.
- SOA Research published a report, “U.S. Population Mortality by Race”, covering historical mortality from 1999-2018 by race as categorized by population data from the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention’s (CDC) WONDER dataset. This report also shows the breakdown of COVID-19 deaths by race due to the influence of the pandemic on mortality.
